Flashing Shino Slip Wood-fired Tea Bowls (Chawan) #3

$395.00

Flashing shino slip is formulated to take advantage of the chemistry of the ash and flame of a wood-firing. This white clay slip is fluxed entirely with soda based fluxes just like shino glazes. Soda is very responsive to the vaporized calcium, potassium and soda carried in the flame of a wood-firing. This responsiveness registers a wide range of colors across the surface of the bowl. Slips are applied in a fluid asymmetry. Gaps of exposed clay highlight the contrast between the qualities of the clay and the flashing shino slip. The results rival the best of abstract expressionist painting. Bowls emerge from the wood-fire with shapes, colors and textures created from an ash imbued paint applied with a brush of flame. A finished bowl offers endless landscapes to the discerning eye.
