Sculpted Slip Wood-fired Tea Bowls (Chawan)

These unique bowls are formed by partially throwing a bowl and then coating the bowl with a thick paste like slip. The bowl is then thrown to completion. Finaly the thick slip is sculpted to create faceted and flowing gestural form. The ridges and valleys created by this method of sculpting the form create a complex surface that takes advantage of the passage of flame and ash during the wood-firing to generate a subtle range of colors and textures.
